The venue is the School of Health Sciences at the University of Aveiro‘s Campus de Santiago, overlooking the Aveiro lagoon, which is renowned internationally for its many buildings designed by famous Portuguese architects, only a short distance from the city centre.

About University of Aveiro (UA)

The University of Aveiro (UA) was created in 1973, with the mission to provide undergraduate and postgraduate education, to generate research and promote cooperation with society. Its rapid growth along with being one of the most innovative universities in Portugal granted UA increasingly well placed positions in the international rankings of university’s research and teaching.

Now, UA has about 15,000 students on undergraduate and postgraduate programs, more than 240 courses, from specialisation training courses to doctoral and postdoctoral programs from different areas, including Health Sciences. In this area there are two units in the University, one university department (the Department of Health Sciences) and a polytechnic school (the School of Health Sciences). Since October of 2001 the two units (department and school) have offered various undergraduate courses, master degrees and doctoral programs.

The University Campus is close to the city centre, around the Aveiro lagoon, and it is exemplar by its architecture and the quality of its infrastructures that have won several national and international awards. The School of Health Sciences moved to a new building in 2012, with wide spaces and moderns.

It is possible to live in the campus because it has halls of residence for students and staff, libraries, a bookshop, canteens, bars and restaurants, sports facilities, laundry, a post-office, stores, a bank, and a kindergarten, all of this, near to the city centre.

To reach the UA, the closest airport is Francisco Sá Carneiro International Airport in Oporto, located around 70km to the north of Aveiro. To travel from the airport to the railway station (Porto-Campanhã), which has direct rail connections to Aveiro, it is possible to take a cab (takes about 30 minutes) or to use the Metro, Violet (E) Line, which has a terminal at the airport (takes about 32 minutes – Z4 ticket). The travel by train takes about 45 minutes.

Located 250kms to the south of Aveiro is the Portela International Airport in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. The trip from the airport to Aveiro can be done by train from the nearest railway station, Oriente Station that can be reached by taxi (10 minutes) or subway (20 minutes), and there are many trains running regularly between Lisbon and Aveiro. If you take the Alfa Pendular train, the journey takes about 2 hours and if you choose a regular train that trip is about 2h20 m. From Aveiro railway station to the university campus it is around 20 min walking or you can travel by taxi or by bus.

About Aveiro

Aveiro, situated in the Baixo Vouga sub-region, is one of the most populous cities in Portugal, situated between Oporto e Coimbra, it has an area of 200Km2 approximately and a little less than 80,000 inhabitants.

Aveiro, situated on the west coast, flanked by the Atlantic Ocean, is known by its special light and the lagoon with typical boats (moliceiros) on its beautiful estuary. Its beaches of white sand and good fish have a lot of beautiful things to see, such as the lighthouse of Barra Beach and typical multicolored striped houses of Costa Nova Beach where the lovely weather invites to rest and to enjoy an array of water sports.

There are several attractions that the city of Aveiro can offer the visitant, including monuments, shopping, a traditional fish market and the famous “Praça do Peixe” with its pubs and terraces with a special nightlife since the University of Aveiro was created in the 1970s.

It is possible to reach Aveiro by car, by train or by bus and the airport of Oporto is only 70 km (45 minutes) away. The distance from Lisbon is about 250 Km (2 hours by train).
